Northgate Seattle

Northgate is the only neighbourhood in the north part of Seattle, Washington, US, named after and centred around Northgate Mall in the north, the country’s first covered shopping mall. The 130th Street and the NE Northgate Way are its main east-west thoroughfares, while Aurora Avenue N and Roosevelt Way NE are its main north-south thoroughfares (SR 99). The 1st, College Way-Meridian Avenue N, 15th, and 5th avenues NE are minor arterials. The district is bisected by the south fork of the Thornton Creek watershed, Interstate 5. North Seattle College (NSC), and the Seattle Kraken Iceplex centre are the most distinctive features of the neighbourhood, aside from the eponymous mall.

Development

In the last few years, the Northgate region has seen a lot of commercial and residential growth, and there are a lot of big projects in the works. To accommodate future population expansion, the area’s height limits have been raised to 85′.

The Northgate Mall was rebuilt in 2009, and dozens of new stores were added. In 2006, a library, community centre and new park built across 5th Avenue NE in the region of Northgate Mall in the Northgate area. The city’s goal is to help Northgate expand more quickly.

A plenty of business in the hotel development area, has confirmed as a limited part, with just the Hotel of Nexus, once a Ramada Inn, serving as the city’s lone upmarket hotel. The Aurora Avenue motels are located in the Northgate neighbourhood. Northgate railway station on the Link light rail, was established in October 2021 as the best terminus of the Northgate Link Extension, is expected to be surrounded by dense mixed-use development.

Beginning in 2021, Northgate will become the most populated place to ensure the Seattle Kraken’s headquarters and team practise facilities.

History

What is the situation now? Since the end of the last glacial epoch (c. 8,000 BCE—10,000 years ago), Northgate has been inhabited. The Liq’tid Springs location had been used as a spiritual healing spa by the Dkhw’Duw’Absh, People of the Inside, and Xacuab, People of the Large Lake, Lushootseed (Skagit-Nisqually) Coast Salish native people. They gathered cranberries from the Slo’q ‘qed (SLOQ-qed, bald head), an 85-acre (34-hectare) marsh and bog near the NSCC parking lot, Interstate 5 interchange, and Northgate Mall. In what are now urban neighbourhoods, large open spaces for wildlife habitat and forage (anthropogenic grasslands) were maintained by selective burning every few years. The Duwamish tribe now represents the descendants of Native Americans.

Famous Places

The architecture of the Idriss Mosque located in Pinehurst is unlike anything else in Seattle. The first mosque in Seattle (1981) and the first mosque west of the Mississippi River to be built in a Middle Eastern design features a dome in the shape of octagon and a symbolic minaret, both topped with crescent moons and sheathed in copper, red brick walls guarded with buff brick, and tall glass-block windows made with strong lintels in the shape of Moorish arches.

Although there are three other shopping centres in the United States that predate it, the Northgate Mall is the first and oldest regional shopping area dubbed a mall, having opened in 1950. It was originally located in the city limits of Seattle.
